If you’re like me, you’re probably a little hesitant about getting on a road bike. It looks kind of awkward with its small frame, thin tires and curled handle bars. I grew up with mountain bikes and bmx’s and I thought they were great. Until I got on my first road bike.

Road bikes are great because of how versatile they are. Whether you want to grab and go on a quick ride to the market or a 30 mile course, it’ll get the job done quicker and easier. They usually come with an aluminum frame with carbon fiber forks which make it ultra light. The lighter weight allows you to ride longer, harder, and not get sloppy with your form and mechanics. Clipping your shoes into your pedals takes some getting used to but once you do get used to it, there is no other way to ride.

California has some of the greatest routes for avid cyclists. Whether inland or by the coast, there are beautiful roads to take your bike out onto. Be careful for drivers and always yield. Remember to be a defensive rider. You can never assume that a vehicle is going to give you right of way. And of course, always wear a helmet.
